Dr. Mark Blanchard is a licensed clinical psychologist dedicated to helping people navigate life’s challenges with insight, depth, and compassion. He provides integrative psychodynamic psychotherapy and comprehensive psychological assessment services for adolescents, adults, and couples with specialized expertise in anxiety, depression, identity development, personality functioning, and relational wellbeing.
Dr. Blanchard is a staff psychologist with the Emerging Young Adult Services at Massachusetts Mental Health Center and an Instructor in Psychology at Harvard Medical School. He also teaches in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University, where he lectures on the mind-body connection, personality, and behavioral science research methods. His clinical approach is collaborative and individualized, informed by empirically supported methods, psychodynamic theory, and a deep respect for each person’s unique story and goals.
Dr. Blanchard completed his postdoctoral fellowship in the Program for Psychotherapy (PFP) and the Neuropsychological and Psychological Assessment (NAPA) Service at Cambridge Health Alliance / Harvard Medical School, and his predoctoral internship at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. Across these settings, his training focused on complex trauma, personality disorders, and severe mental illness. He earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Detroit Mercy, where his dissertation explored how adult attachment and interpersonal dynamics influence doctor-patient relationships and healthcare utilization. His Master’s thesis examined how different patterns of emotional bonding and needs for connection shape the way people relate to romantic partners, family members, and friends.
As a researcher and author, Dr. Blanchard has published in peer-reviewed journals on topics including personality assessment, adult attachment, narcissism, alternative models of personality, and psychotherapy process. He is the co-author of The Psychology of Cardiovascular Illness: Interventions, Ethics, and Best Practice, a clinical guide for psychologists and allied health professionals working at the intersection of mental and physical health.
He has presented his work at national and international conferences hosted by the Society for Personality Assessment (SPA), the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS), and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP). His clinical and academic work has been recognized through numerous awards, grants, and scholarships from organizations such as the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute (BPSI), American Psychoanalytic Association (APsA), and the University of Detroit Mercy, which honored him with the 2024 Distinguished Student Researcher Award.
Dr. Blanchard is licensed to practice in Massachusetts, New York, Michigan, New Hampshire, and telehealth in Vermont. He is affiliated with professional organizations including the American Psychological Association, Society for Personality Assessment, Massachusetts Psychological Association, National Register of Health Service Psychologists, and Therapeutic Assessment Institute.
